Lenovo Updates Installing Multiple Times After an OS Upgrade - Task Sequence or Windows Servicing Upgrade

Lenovo Updates Installing Multiple Times After an OS Upgrade - Task Sequence or Windows Servicing Upgrade

Symptom

After using an OS Upgrade Task Sequence, all Lenovo Updates targeted to the device will repetitively install, show waiting for restart, and then upon restart, reappear in the Software Updates in Software Center to be installed again.

Lenovo Updates Catalog Agent 1005 and prior will not survive an upgrade. During the upgrade, the WMI Provider for the LUCAgent will be broken. The LUCAgent will show as installed, but will not work as desired. The LUCAgent processes and converts driver dates to a readable format for evaluation of the IsInstalled rules of the applicable updates. Since the IsInstalled rules govern what updates are present on a device, if this WMI class is not populated correctly, updates will not show as installed and Windows Update will attempt to install the update. This occurrence will continue repetitively.

Cause

The Lenovo Updates Catalog Agent 1003.1 and 1005 will not survive a Windows upgrade. During the upgrade, the WMI Provider for the LUCAgent will be removed and not reregistered, which will prevent the Lenovo Updates Catalog Agent from performing as expected. The LUCAgent will show as installed, but will not work as desired.

The LUCAgent processes and converts driver dates to a readable format for evaluation of the IsInstalled rules of the applicable updates. The IsInstalled rules govern what updates are present on a device. If this WMI class is not populated correctly, updates will not show as installed and the Windows Update service will attempt to install the update. This occurrence will continue repetitively.

Solution

Publish and deploy the latest Lenovo Updates Catalog Agent to the estate prior to performing any In Place Upgrade Task Sequences or Windows 10 Servicing plans being implemented. The Lenovo Updates Catalog Agent versions 1006 and newer implements a fix to allow the WMI Provider to survive upgrades and to rebuild itself if WMI is rebuilt.
