Getting Started: Drive Eraser
This guide provides the essential steps for initiating a secure data erasure session using Lenovo | Blancco Drive Eraser bootable media. Use this procedure to permanently sanitize storage devices (HDDs, SSDs, NVMe) in preparation for asset redeployment, recycling, or secure decommissioning in compliance with industry-recognized erasure standards.
Prerequisites
Ensure the following requirements are met before beginning:
- A valid license for Lenovo | Blancco Drive Eraser.
- The official Blancco Drive Eraser ISO image, downloaded from your licensed account.
- A USB drive (or other bootable media) created with the provided ISO.
- The target device is connected to a stable AC power source.
- Critical: A verified backup of any data you intend to keep, as the erasure process is permanent and irreversible.
- (Recommended) Network connectivity for automatic report upload to the management console.
Procedure
- Download the official Blancco Drive Eraser ISO from your Lenovo/Blancco customer portal.
- Use a trusted media creation tool (e.g., Rufus, BalenaEtcher) to write the ISO file to a blank USB drive.
- Validate that the newly created bootable USB is recognized in the BIOS/UEFI of your target system.
Part 2: Execute the Data Erasure
- Insert the bootable USB media into the target device.
- Power on the device and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup (typically F1, F2, or Enter). Configure the boot order to prioritize the USB drive.
- Save the settings and exit. The system will reboot into the Lenovo | Blancco Drive Eraser environment.
- Upon loading, the interface will display all detected storage devices. Carefully review this list.
- Select the specific drive(s) you need to erase.
- Choose the erasure method mandated by your organization's security policy (e.g., NIST 800-88 Purge, DoD 5220.22-M).
- Confirm your selection to begin the sanitization process. Do not interrupt power or restart the device during erasure.
- Monitor the on-screen progress. Upon successful completion, an erasure summary will be displayed.
Part 3: Secure the Erasure Certificate
- Save the Report: You can save the detailed erasure certificate directly to a USB storage device from the interface.
- Upload to Management Portal: If the system is networked and configured, the certificate will automatically upload to your Lenovo | Blancco Management Portal for centralized audit and archiving.
- Retain these certificates in accordance with your internal compliance and record-keeping policies.
Post-Erasure Steps
- Verify that all erasure certificates have been successfully saved or uploaded.
- Update your asset management or IT inventory system to reflect the device's sanitized status.
- If repurposing the hardware, you may proceed with a fresh operating system installation.
- If decommissioning the asset, follow your organization's approved IT asset disposition (ITAD) workflow.
Troubleshooting
Symptom: Drive not listed in the interface.
- Probable Cause: The drive may not be detected by the system BIOS/UEFI, it could be encrypted (e.g., with BitLocker), or there may be a loose connection.
- Recommended Action: First, verify the drive is visible in the system's own BIOS/UEFI settings. If it is encrypted, you must disable the hardware or software encryption before attempting erasure. Finally, check all data and power cable connections to the drive.
Symptom: Erasure job fails or stops unexpectedly.
- Probable Cause: This is often due to power instability, an issue with the bootable media, or using an unsupported version of the software for the specific hardware.
- Recommended Action: Ensure the device is connected directly to a reliable AC power source, not a battery. Try recreating the bootable USB media using a different USB drive or a different media creation tool. Confirm you are using the latest version of Lenovo | Blancco Drive Eraser that supports your target device's hardware.
Symptom: Unable to save the erasure report.
- Probable Cause: The destination USB storage device may not be detected, may be full, or may use an incompatible file system.
- Recommended Action: Ensure the USB drive is properly inserted. Check that it has sufficient free space. If problems persist, try reformatting the USB drive to a compatible file system (such as FAT32) on another computer before using it to save the report.

For persistent issues, contact Lenovo support with the specific error code displayed on screen.
