Obtaining and Viewing Logs

Purpose

This document provides information about where to obtain logging information related to Lenovo Patch.

Description

To view log files, use the CMTrace tool that ships with the Configuration Manager product. CMTrace can be found on the Configuration Manager server under:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\tools\cmtrace.exe

Note: If Configuration Manager is installed on another drive, reference that drive letter instead.

It is recommended to create a shortcut to this or set this as the default log reader.

Locations of log files and useful information:

  • Configuration Manager Server:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\logs
    • Contains all logs related to operations of Configuration Manager
    • Most useful log(s) when troubleshooting issues with Lenovo Patch:
      • wsyncmgr.log - WSUS synchronization operations
    C:\Users\<username>\Lenovo\Lenovo Patch
    • Contains both logs and datafiles/binaries used by the Lenovo Patch for MEM plugin.
      • AutoPublish.log - Contains logging information related to the publishing processes executed by this user.
      • DataMigrationTool.log - Contains logging information related to the execution of the Data Migration Tool run by this user.
      • Lenovo Patch.log - Contains logging of Lenovo Patch plugin operations executed by this user.
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp
    • Contains log files related to the installation of Lenovo Patch.
      • SCCMPatchSetup_YYYYMMDD_HHmmss.log - Contains logging information about the download and installation of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015-2019 x86, Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable x64 and .NET 4.8, should any be missing and need to be installed.
      • SCCMPatchInstall_YYYYMMDD_HHmmss.log - Contains logging information about the installation of the Lenovo Patch plugin.
    • Only referenced for the user installing Lenovo Patch to a device.
  • Client:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\logs
    • ContentTransferManager.log
    • UpdateDeployment.log
    • UpdatesHandler.log
    • UpdatesStore.log
    • WUAHandler.log
    (On Windows 10 or 8.1) C:\Users\<username>\Desktop
    • WindowsUpdate.log - Use PowerShell cmdlet Get-WindowsUpdateLog to generate this log file.
    (On Windows 7) C:\Windows
    • WindowsUpdate.log
    C:\ProgramData\Lenovo\Lenovo Patch\Installation
    • Contains files related to deployment of dependent action patches. Collect and zip everything in this folder.
    • Note: This folder is automatically cleaned out after 30 days.
